Spice Market & StarBucks

Sitting in Starbucks in Times Square right after having dinner at Spice Market. NYC never ceases to amaze me with the diversity of food offerings. Three hours in Jean Georges’ latest restaurant — and a really big restaurant at that & packed. Lots of people eating a version of Asian/Thai food. I thought the food was good — but being that I was in Thailand 3 times last year – I didn’t feel like it was authentic — but it was good. Service wasn’t great & our waiter couldn’t really help with the wine at all — but experientially it was nice. Right from there — from all those “beautiful” people — to Star$$ in Times Square — lots of street musicians drinking coffee — listening to music — drinking coffee from some of the same parts of the world where the food from earlier in the evening came from.

Be it Jean Georges’ clientele — or Star$$ — we seem to have become enamored by the exotic in food – wine & coffee. Food that’s imported – “new” food – different food & while I spend so much of my time & energy “talking” about local food – promoting “local & regional” — sitting eatin & drinkin food that mostly comes w/ frequent flyer miles. Makes me ponder our lives & our choices.
